The Changing Character of Warfare (CCW) programme was founded in 2003 with the assistance of a Leverhulme Grant. It is devoted to the interdisciplinary study of war and conflict and has published 11 titles in its series at Oxford University Press. We are conducting research on a wide range of issues surrounding the history of armed conflict in the modern period. In 2011/12, our research priorities are the history of counterinsurgency and colonial wars, the history of the laws of warfare and the changing relationship between war and the state. The CCW programme welcomes Visiting Research fellows who wish to contribute to our research themes.

Located in the Faculty of History the Programme is a cooperative effort with the Centre for International Studies in the Department of Politics and International Relations, and the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics in the Faculty of Philosophy. It also has links with and support from members of other Oxford disciplines, particularly the Faculty of Law.

In addition, recognising the need to relate theory to reality in the study of war, the CCW Programme actively seeks the participation of practitioners by bringing to Oxford representatives of the armed services, of governments and of multinational organisations, and involving them in its research projects, conferences and seminars.
